Join in Celebrating U.S. Manufacturing

Manufacturing Day 2017 is October 6th. Industry leaders and community organizations across the U.S. are joining together to showcase manufacturing and the opportunities it presents.

Manufacturing greatly impacts the U.S. economy. A strong manufacturing sector leads to more research and development, innovation, productivity, exports, and middle-class jobs. Consider the following:

  • Manufacturers contributed $2.18 trillion to the U.S. economy in 2016 (Source: Bureau of Economic Analysis)

  • Manufacturers in the U.S. perform more than three-quarters of all private-sector research and development in the nation

  • For every $1.00 spent in manufacturing, another $1.81 is added to the economy (Source: NAM calculations using IMPLAN)

  • Manufacturers have one of the highest percentages of workers who are eligible for health benefits provided by their employer (Source: Kaiser Family Foundation)

  • Over the next decade, nearly 3.5 million manufacturing jobs will likely be needed, and 2 million are expected to go unfilled due to the skills gap (Source: Deloitte and the Manufacturing Institute)

  • Exports support higher-paying jobs for an increasingly educated and diverse workforce (Source: MAPI Foundation, using data from the Bureau of Economic Analysis)

Relative to Nebraska, manufacturing accounts for 12 percent of the total output in the state and employs 9.6 percent of the workforce. Total output from manufacturing was $13.76 billion in 2015. Over 95,000 Nebraskans were employed by manufacturers in 2015, with an average annual compensation of $58,572 (Center for Manufacturing Research, March 2017).

Help celebrate Manufacturing Day 2017 by attending a local event. Numerous Nebraska manufacturers–including Teledyne Isco, Airlite Plastics Co., Duncan Aviation, Kawasaki Motors Manufacturing Corp., and many more–are hosting events in their plant, including tours and presentations.

These events, while informational in nature, are much more. It’s a way for manufacturers to convey their passion for what they do, and explain why and how young people can embrace the profession and realize a rewarding career.
