Finding Growth Through Exports

Has your business been looking for growth, but you haven't yet determined the right path? You may want to consider exporting. Today, the largest markets in the world are outside of the United States. Exporting has a strong economic impact for businesses in the United States on a state-wide and global scale.

Access to Global Markets is Increasing

According to the International Trade Administration, a branch of the U.S. Department of Commerce, U.S. exports of merchandise totaled $1.6 trillion in 2014. Exports from the U.S. continue to be a large, and growing, part of our economy – more than 13 percent of our nation’s GDP. In particular, the Administration cites five reasons why exporting is good for the bottom line of American businesses:

  1. Access to global markets is increasing.
  2. More than 70 percent of the world's purchasing power is outside of the U.S.
  3. Exporting is profitable.
  4. Exporting increases the competitive advantage of the U.S. in regard to high quality and innovative goods and services.
  5. Businesses that export are more likely to mitigate risks and stay in business.

Specific to Nebraska, the U.S. Global Leadership Coalition has found that export-supported manufacturing jobs account for 15 percent of employment in our state. Exports to markets in Asia in 2013 accounted for over $1 billion of Nebraska’s total exports that year.
